A wonder of Africa: the Benguerra island

On the African coast of the Indian Ocean, just across the lush island of Madagascar, there is a beauty land and is the only tragedy of its history: Mozambique. The signing of a peace treaty in 1992 , and subsequent election of 1994 finally marked the beginning of the route to the final return to normalcy in this country – a prerequisite for the emergence of an international standard tourism , especially where services –  not yet fully taken on mainland – but already made some, exceptionally, in some pristine islands of the coast. One of them in particular, Benguerra, is the site of a Lodge since 1990 so special to have recently attracted even one of the world’s most popular movie stars : Oscar winner Nicole Kidman.

Benguerra Island, 33 square miles of virgin nature and only two tiny fishing villages, is part of Barzaruto and five small islands, about ten miles off the coast of Mozambique. The archipelago was declared a Natural Park in 1971 and is managed by The Barzaruto Archipelago Conservation Project , an organization that promotes only forms of tourism perfectly harmonized, which does not result in any negative impact on natural ecosystems and the about 2,500 permanent residents of the archipelago.

The Benguerra Lodge consists of just 12 bungalows on stilts made of wood and straw, for a total of only 24 guests. Each bungalow is isolated , hidden in a grove of palm trees and has private access to a white beach of clear water and sugar, that 37 km of virgin reef ideally connected to the rest of the archipelago. From the beach you can start every day for excursions by catamaran, diving and fishing offshore. The main body of the lodge with a bar, excellent restaurant with a great South African wine cellar and a garden, is also built in harmony with nature, so that in the whole complex – with attention to every smallest details and managed at the highest level of hospitality – there are no doors, no glass windows, to remove every barrier with its surroundings .

Benguerra – populated by 115 species of birds and hundreds of pink flamingos, thanks to numerous freshwater ponds of the inland – will never be, in fact, an island ‘for tourist’: feel the atmosphere is to enrich the experience for a true return to the primordial rhythms of nature. see more
