A Different Vacation Idea – Whale Watching In Alaska
Do your vacations seem a bit like the same old same old? Like to try something new that would actually be interesting and unique? Thinking out of the box on vacation ideas really isn’t that hard if you put your mind to it. For instance, you might consider spending early summer in Alaska checking out whales.
The idea of going to Alaska on vacation might seem a bit odd at first, but it really shouldn’t. Alaska is beautiful in the winter, but obviously a tad bit cold. In the summer, however, it warms up and shows its full glory with incredibly bursts of life wherever you look. Ask anyone that has headed up the state before and they’ll blabber on endlessly about it.
Alaska is also a unique destination for whale watching. There are a number of breeds that congregate off its coasts as they come to feed during the spring and summer months. The collection of whales is unique in that most spend their winters in different locations ranging from Mexico to Hawaii and beyond. Once the weather starts heating up, however, they all make the trip back to the Alaskan waters and this makes for some prime whale watching.
So, just what kind of whales are we talking about here? There are a number of types. You have Grays, Humpbacks, Minke and the increasingly rare Beluga whales for just a start. On top of this, you also have pods of Orcas, which are better known as killer whales. This name is somewhat ironic since Orcas are not whales at all, but a member of the dolphin family. Regardless, there are few places in the world outside of Alaska where you can see such a collection.
Most whale watching in the continental United States takes place in the cold months of winter as whales migrate past the coastlines. The beauty of Alaska is the best time is really May to June with July and August being nearly as good. This makes prime vacation material. The whales are so graceful and amazing that it will simply amaze you. When it comes to a unique vacation that you will talk about for years, this one is pretty hard to beat.
