A unique, magical place, ngorongoro crater, tanzania africa

A Unique, Magical Place, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania Africa!

Ever wanted to get away form it all and cut yourself off from the outside world, then the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, Africa is the place for you. Ngorongoro is not actually a crater but a Caldera. A Caldera is formed when a Volcano collapses in on itself and this happened here millions of years ago. This massive crater like feature is 20 kms in diameter and 600 metres deep; it is the largest, unflooded and completely preserved caldera in the world. As you peer over this vast expanse from the cliff like edges you would think it is a baron landscape with no life. However pick up a pare of binoculars and take a look around at the floor 600m below and you will see signs of life.

What you may be seeing is Cape buffalo, one of the most dangerous animals in Africa; this will then give you some indication of the scale of the caldera you see before you. The In fact Ngorongoro crater is so large that is generates its own weather system with clouds often surrounding the rim of the crater where there is densely forested areas. Sometimes these clouds are so dense that they spill into and fill up the crater. The weather here can be so strange and localised that one park of the crater could be basking in sunshine, while the other side of the crater is experiencing torrential rain.

The main attraction of the Ngorongoro Crater is the wildlife. Here the animals have a refuge and thrive. There is a surprising amount of big game here including the Black Rhino which are about 30 strong. In the dry season the Rhino are hard to spot as the sleep all day in the long grass, but during the rainy season they are out grazing and litter the crater floor. Ngorongoro is also famous for its Lion population which have been filmed extensively. However these Lions are chronically inbred but the isolation of the crater keeps new Lions and new blood lines from getting in from the Serengeti which is nearby.

The crater has a lake in the centre called Lake Magadi. This is a huge soda lake which is home for at least some of the year to hundreds and thousands of Flamingos. With the exception of the long necked Giraffe due to the steep walls, most of the common animals of Africa are found here. Many of these animals are residents of this amazing place so if you are going to travel Africa you will more than likely get to see some of the big five roaming the crater floor.

Officially the Ngorongoro Crater is open just after dawn and there is a beautiful lodge there called the Sopa Lodge. This would be a great stop on your Africa holidays and I would highly recommend it to anyone, you really have to see it to believe it.

African Safaris – Take An African Safari Holiday For The Ultimate Holiday Experience

Forget Disney Land, it’s an African safari that holds the real magic. Few destinations can compete with an African safari, both for the kind of experience it has to offer and for its unsurpassed uniqueness. It’s fair to say you will not have experienced anything quite like it if you have never been on an African safari before. For this reason Africa is becoming more and more popular with tourists from all over the world, and for many a good reason. As a result, tourism and the associated services that go with it have become a major contributor to revenue source for many locals on the continent, and to some it is their primary livelihood. The African safari industry is really blossoming.

If you picture an African safari do you see yourself being driven around in an open top off-road vehicle across the African plains? Oh there’s a lion. That’s usually the image most people will conjure up, usually because they’ve seen it in wildlife programs. However, the actual African safari trip will involve a lot more to see and do than just driving across the landscapes, there are many, many sights to see and things to do. Any African safari would be very dull and drab if all that were on your list of things to do was drive around and take in the scenery. Don’t get me wrong, the tours of the Savannahs and the wildlife they have to offer are second to none, offering beautiful scenery with animals we have only ever seen in captivity, seeing them in their natural habitat is really a beautiful experience.

There are many, many different safari types to suit all groups of people in all situations. There are family safaris, beach and bush safaris, walking safaris, fly in safaris, photographic safaris and the most romantic one of all, the honeymoon safari.

Family safaris are aimed towards providing every member of the family with memories that will last a lifetime. Nothing can prepare you or those around you for the thrill of seeing a lion darting through the long grass in chase of its prey, no educational or informative wildlife video will ever come close generating the feeling you get from seeing it in the flesh. If you have children on the safari with you, you can rest assured that they will never forget the experience. Africa is a goldmine for learning and unknown excitement for the whole family, but each safari has different needs. Said needs are bespoke tailored with different options, travel destinations and the accommodation arrangements.

Beach and bush safaris provide you with the best of both worlds. If you are heading to the east coast then you will know that the Indian Oceans laps at the fantastic beaches and gorgeous coastline here. There are fantastic hotels and resorts along the coast leaving you with all options open with where you can stay and what you can do. If you want to relax on the beautiful beaches then make that your priority, but remember to see some of the wildlife while you are there. Visit the beach first and then pop off to a game reserve and bask in all that nature has to offer or vice versa.

A walking safari offers you just that. If you are an avid fan of nature and using your legs then you are more suited for a walking adventure, reaching parts of the landscape that would be impassable by car. It is a fantastic way to really experience the landscape first hand. Camels would be your luggage carriers as they are extremely well suited to the African climes and are of course economically friendly.

How do African safaris from a birds eye view sound? That’s exactly what you’d get from a fly in safari. Maybe it is the last day of your vacation and you feel that you haven’t packed in enough during your stay, so what better to end on than a fly in safari? Seeing the African landscape from a chartered aircraft will leave you feeling that you ended on a high, literally! These types of safaris are often custom made and need to be booked well in advance, but it’s something to think about at least.

If you are a serious photographer and are planning on going to Africa to boost your portfolio with the shots of a lifetime then you need to embark on a photographic safari. Tours operated by local professional photographers will take you around all the hot spots to find that perfect moment in time waiting for you to capture. Of course, that one in a million shot is not a guarantee, but it is sure more likely to be found with the aid of a professional at your side.

Last but by no means is least the honeymoon safari and boy oh boy, what a safari that is. It is the ultimate in romance, in comfort and togetherness. I couldn’t imagine anything more meaningful than waking up with my loved one to the sounds of the Serengeti beating through the bedroom window along with the African morning sun shining down on my face. It really would be one of those “life doesn’t get any better than this” moments.

Whatever African safari appeals to you most you can feel safe in the knowledge that your safari is likely to be the holiday of a lifetime; incomparable to anything you have ever previously experience. Even if you have been on an African wildlife safari before, it won’t be the same the second time around. There is always so much to experience, the culture to enjoy and the sights to take in that your only worry will be that the holiday has to end.
