“Good food must be savoured delicately, slowly, attentively and respectfully, in a befitting manner, with finesse and technique, with relish and appreciation and you will experience true gustatory delight. That’s essence of the Art of Eating.”

-An excerpt from book Appetite for a stroll, by Vikram Karve

Some may feel that it’s a wrong idea to live for eating, but writer Vikram Karve has a different theory to offer. “Eating is not just making yourself not-hungry. It is about filling your appetite by having a soul-satisfying tasty food,” feels Karve, who follows his appetite rather than following the clock for eating.

Given his taste for rich and spicy food, Karve is often asked about the health aspects of indulging his cravings. “Why neglect the soul while we do so much so for our bodies? I feel, while exercise is good for a healthy body, good and tasty food is neccesary for the soul. So we must strike a balance. I eat good food and I burn it out by walking and exercising. I don’t believe in multi- tasking when it comes to food. That is, when I eat, I just think of the food and the taste, and when I m working out, I just think of my health.”

Speaking about the book that features food joints and eateries in Pune, Karve says that the city offers a lot to food lovers. “In the 1960s food was quite well defined in Pune. While city area like Peths offered typical Mahastrian fare, the Camp and nearby areas offered Chinese and Iranian food. But now, as Pune takes a turn towards becoming a metro, the boundaries have blended and disappeared. We get the same menu everywhere. However, a few old eateries still promise that same flavour which we relished in that era,” recalls Karve.

A teacher by profession, Karve has penned many books and short stories. But the love for good food brought him to share his experience in an entertaining way and at the same time making it informative for people, who can enjoy good food. “The objective behind my writing is infotainment. So that I can not only help people locate the once-famous eateries but also help them realise the importance of good food.”

While Karve believes in having wholesome food, he at times, doesn’t mind pampering his taste buds with a bite of junk food too. “Bhel is the specialty of Pune. It could be rightly called as the signature dish of the city. While the new populace of the city goes for big restaurants, they might give it a thought to try Pune’s all time favourite bhels like – Kalpana Bhel at Saras Bagh, Canal Bhel near Prabhat Road or Kalyam Bhel,” he says.

As Karve savours every bite of food offered by eateries all over the city, he, like any other son, loves the menu from his mother’s kitchen. “I just love the aaloochi bhaji and masale bhaat that my mother prepares. And my love for good food helps me relish every grain,” says Karve.

When asked, if he enjoys cooking as much as eating, he says, “When I got married, one could see more of me, than my wife, in kitchen. But over the years, I have successfully turned my wife into a foodie and we both enjoy food together, be it simple ghar ka khana or a regional delicacy. My wife is good at cooking vegetarian food, while I feel biryani is my forte.”

After a great response for Appetite for a Stroll, Karve plans to write more on food and then perhaps also try his hand at writing on other topics. Guess, variety is the spice of life, especially for such a devoted foodie.

Borobudur ( Budhis Mystery in Stone )

Firstly, we must compare Borobudur to a Mandala, that is, a geometrical diagram to assist meditation. Secondly, Borobudur is a magic model of the universe, conceived for the spiritual exercise of the monks.

Borobudur is the answer Buddhism – at a point in its history halfway between the appearance of its founder The Great Buddha Sakyamuni (Siddharta Gautama) and our time – gave to the ever-lasting enigma, that is, the relation of the unreal and illusive world in which mankind opereates and the ultimate reality behind it all. It is an answer of human religious feeling or spiritual feeling – the Union World of forms and Reality or Man and God.

The theatre of the relation between Man and God or forms and Reality expressed in Borobudur’s beautiful existence. Borobudur shows the three spheres of cosmos, that is, sphere of desire, sphere of form and sphere of formless (Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu, and Arupadhatu).

The basic section shows the law of cause and effect (Karma) from the Teaching of Buddha. The sight of the misery of this world will condition the mind of pilgrim to be prepared for the idea of liberation from the world. Evil actions will bring the suffering and good actions will bring the conditions to comprehend a more higher teaching.

The second section explaines the practice of the self-deliverence of Buddha Sakyamuni. We must release ourselves from the suffering but we cannot stop the suffering itself.

The following section teach us how we can learn from the footsteps of Boddhisattvas who offer themselves for the happiness of all beings. The boddhisattvas have succeeded in getting rid of all the attachment and attain the state of spiritual liberation for the happines of all living beings.

The final section is the greatness of all the Dhyani-Buddhas (Meditative Buddhas) with a primary highest Buddha called Adhi-Buddha.

Observing these facts, we can say that Borobudur Temple is a perfect masterpiece viewed both esthetic and religious settings, explaining the holy teaching of the Great Buddha Sakyamuni (Siddharta gautama), namely; Karmavibbhanga teaching, Lalitavistara which guides pilgrim to get rid of the sufferings, Jatakamala, Avadana, Gandavyuha and Bhadrachari or Maha Samantha Bhadracarita Pranidanangatha teachings which explain how the pilgrim must learn and follow all Boddhisattvas’ holy actions for the happines of all living beings. Finally, the pilgrim will encounter the Union World of Human and God, and attain the world of Absoluteness, Oneness, and the Ultimate Reality or also called Nirwana.

A Visit To Pallikarni Lake, Chennai

On 2nd February, the day which is celebrated as Wetland day throughout the world, we students along with our teacher paid a visit to Pallikarni Lake, Chennai. There we saw a lake which has been transformed to a garbage dumping area over a long period of time.
The lake was filled with reeds and garbages and there was no proper place for watching the lake, where a large number of birds migrate from other countries.
Bad smell has polluted the marshland and people became unaware about its importance. Since it is a wetland, we can find many kinds of bird species there. It was amazing that birds come here; even it was neglected and abandoned by human. The condition became worse, after the construction of roads.
Some of the birds we saw there were BLACK WINGED STILT which is found in Australia, Central and South America, Africa, Southern and South eastern Asia, Eurasia etc… We have also seen MOORHEN, which breeds in UK, England. NORTHERN PIN TAIL DUCKS, which breeds in Europe, Asia, PIED CUCKOO which breeds in Africa and POND HERON which is found in Myanmar, South Iran and Sri Lanka, was also found in this Pallikarni Lake. PELICAN were also found here. These species get attracted to this polluted wetland because they find more food and comfort. But it is not sure that they are healthy.
Pallikarni Lake is an important place in Chennai. If this place is properly cleaned and protected, it is sure that this lake will be transformed to a beautiful tourist place and also attracts even more birds. This place is a good bird watching center and it can encourage people to learn more about birds.
Through public awareness, support from government and through strict laws against dumping of garbage, here, this lake can become a paradise for the migrating birds in our country.

Armenia Wildlife in Cyclopean and Modern Culture

  Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan now is the largest sweat lake in Transcaucasus, but that’s not the only enticement bringing visitors of Armenia to dazzling cool blue waters and picturesque mountainsides. Its stunning landscape shaped by millions of years of volcanic eruptions veils remnants of antique monuments and undiscovered culture. It gives the feeling of mystery; a breath of a wonderland connecting ancient and modern lifestyle: plant life, unique spices of birds and prehistoric culture.

There are monuments in Sevan old constructions of cyclopean fortresses. Some say there are over 40 of them around the lake. Cyclopean name often applied to a primitive method of structures huge irregular stones, fitted together with good quality joining, evidencing the traditions of ancient inhabitants.

The lakeshore habitat especially on Ardaneesh Peninsula is relatively undisturbed, which makes it a great location for a quiet get-a-way. It is Sevan National Park with around 1000 different plant species which survive in sharp climatic changes. Among the more common forms of plant life are pine and apricot trees, juniper, rose plants, and calm meadows. In the spring the mountainsides are covered in a carpet of wild flowers.

The shores of the lake are suitable breeding grounds for about sixty different species of birds, served resting and wintering area for those migrating from Eastern Europe to Africa. Migrants include the Greater Flamingo, Great White Pelican, Whooper Swan, Great Black-Headed Gull, several shorebirds such as Curlew Sandpiper, Dunlin, Little Stint, and others. It worth to enjoy the sights and sounds of the current inhabitants and, perhaps, discover species that are newcomers to the area.

Summer season Sevan is popular resort and vacation area with comfortable hotels situated close to beautiful seashores.
