A Mixed Bag of Marvels: Melbourne

Melbourne, the queen-city tears through the evening with its contrasting star-lit spires which complements the golden hue of the horizon. The city is regarded as the cultural capital of Australia featuring Victorian-era architecture, many museums and beautiful gardens, but what makes Melbourne unique is its weather which can change drastically and so quickly that it is also called ‘the city of four seasons in a day’. Travelers from around the world flock to Melbourne to catch up with major sporting events and exploring the surrounding regions.

Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia and the capital of the south-eastern state of Victoria, located at the head of Port Phillip Bay. The sports-crazy city boasts of a multicultural population comprising of Greeks, Vietnamese, Italian, Jewish and others. Melbourne is full of tourist attractions and is indeed one of remaining few cities in the world which still have trams running right through the roads. While you take a ride through the city streets, you may spot the remaining Victorian-era building among the modern high-rises. Melbourne has one of the world’s largest casinos, named the Crown Casino and there’s Albert Park which is home to Melbourne’s F1 Grand Prix circuit and you surely won’t want to miss that much of a speed. For travelers who love to dip their taste buds on culinary delicacies, Melbourne presents an abundance of affordable, high quality restaurants offering almost every cuisine.

Adventure lovers can have a whale of a time in Melbourne with a visit to the Grampians National Park which is famous for its hiking trails, wildlife and wildflowers. It’s perhaps the best place where you can spot Kangaroos right across the road when they come to feed. If you are lucky enough and have decent eyesight, you might as well spot the endangered koalas. Though some luck might come in handy! A trip to the Phillip Island presents a delightful view the penguin parade in all its grandeur. St. Kilda is Melbourne’s beachside suburb and is immensely popular. The photogenic nature of Melbourne couldn’t have gone unnoticed and for sure, it’s one of the most popular filming locations in the world. Going around Melbourne is easy and cheap with car rentals, but some people actually find it interesting to roam around Melbourne by cycling and they do come cheap!

Accommodation in Melbourne is excellent which ranges from budget hotels to mid-range to luxurious hotels in and around the city. The City Center houses some of the best budget and luxurious

hotels in Melbourne but travelers can also look for cheaper options in the seaside suburb of St. Kilda.

A Historical Palace of Splendid Architecture and Art Work

Built according to the Tudor style architectural structure of the Windsor Castle of England, “Bangalore Palace” has a history of over 120 years as a major historic monument in India. Built in 1887 by Reverend Garret in the heart of Bangalore, the palace was previously surrounded by some fascinating gardens in its huge open area which have disappeared to a certain extent today.

Bangalore Palace was constructed occupying a floor area of 45,000 square feet and its vast gardens were occupying about 454 acres around it. All the 35 rooms and the whole palace interior were decorated with floral patterns, graceful wooden carvings, diverse kinds of beautiful paintings and also neo-classical furniture. During the colonial period of the British Empire, the palace was bought from Prince Wodeyar in 1873 by the British elites who were in charge of his education.

The palace includes fortified towers where the visitor could observe most of the stylish wood carvings and paintings in its Tudor-style structure completed with battlements, turrets with Gothic windows. The entrance of the palace has been added a unique elegance by its terrific door panel that leads to the grand settings inside. The exquisite ground floor is comprised with an open square that includes granite seats covered with blue ceramic tiles.

The “Durbar Hall” is located in the first floor of the palace which is sort of a completive hall reachable by the stylish staircase. Its wall area also festooned with one of a kind paintings and a huge elephant head has been built up as to be seen from every corner. Most of the features in the hall such as Gothic style stained glass windows, walls and the sofa set have been colored in Yellow. The paintings including Greek and Dutch paintings of the palace belong to the 19th century. The original cost of the palace has been estimated to be one hundred thousand rupees and up to now it has undergone several renovations adding some modifications to increase its attractiveness.

Apart from that, the palace is surrounded by a variety of Bangalore serviced apartments. Being one of the most premier hospitality services in the country providing all world class facilities and interiors, Somerset serviced apartments is the ideal choice of accommodation when visiting this historic Bangalore Palace.

A train crossing, kanpur, utar pradesh, india

A Train Crossing, Kanpur, Utar Pradesh, India

06.00AM, Airport Mumbai.
I  made it in time, driving from the Hotel in Worli. Mumbai is one of the largest cities on our globe and leaves an unforgettable impression behind. In daytime the streets are bustling with activity, the stench of car fumes, the ever present pollution, the traffic jams, are all but pleasant surprises in this overcrowded city.
Jet Airways is always late, Modi-Luft has just taken off to an unknown destination, I observe the frantic activities inside the airport. People rushing, uplifting their Ego in front of the Airline counters, a normal sight in Indians airports. Everyone is a Tycoon, everyone displays a show of force to attract attention. In a country of 1,3 Billion, a vital technique of survival.
After a 3 hour delay our plane finally takes off, in India 12 hours delays are common. The plane is a 737-300 extended version, on the way to Lucknow, U.P. we touch down in New Delhi.
We reach Lucknow airport arolund 3PM. My contact in Kanpur has not shown up. Lucknow airport is not an International airport, its facilities are limited. Bring your own Rupees, there is no Bank to change your foreign currency. Taxi touts swarm around me,
Hello Sir, Taxi to Lucknow Sir. I decide to wait show lack of interest. I will gain this way. When all the passengers have left, after haggling with their drivers, I walk out of the terminal and find quietly a Fiat cabby, who agrees to take me to Lucknow for a decent fare. After years in Africa I find the same rules apply here when it comes to negotiating.
I ask to stop at the first communication center, ISD, or IDD telephone center, to call my contact. It appears the driver would not come and instead he asks the Cabby to take me to Kanpur, a 150 km from here.
The first impression of Lucknow is, the many street side shops in which Sarees are being sold. The craft of Sarree making here is known throughout India, and represents an important part of business. We pass the streets of this city, the usual sceneries with cows strolling through the streets, people respectfully giving way to them. Nobody would touch a cow here, a clear taboo. Donkey carts, with the driver asleep in the carts, are plying the route towards Kanpur. The immense afternoon sun radiates 45 degrees I notice by a thermometer located on a public building, no surprise to me.
After 3 hours drive we reach Kanpur, my destination. The driver takes me to my hotel as instructed, after paying the fare which is reasonable I am shown into my room. Thirty storey tall, the hotel is the best lodge in the city, and stands out from the low level buildings around. I notice the large numbers of buzzards circling above the hotel, using the thermals to their advantage.
Still the afternoon sun is high, the air condition helps me to cool down a bit.
At 18.30 PM I am to meet Mr. Rakej the rep of the company who I will visit. A very pleasant man, he apologizes for the inconvenience of not being picked up. We leave for dinner in his car, the obligatory Fiat, in immaculate condition.
Kanpur – The Railway crossing
We pass through the now darkened city, as everywhere we see whole families moving by scooters, bicycles. Cars are still a luxury here, the traffic mainly consisting of scooters and bicycles, and by passers on foot.
The heat now subsiding, Mr. Rakej explains the various sights of Kanpur, its history. We enter the restaurant, and the following dinner is a delight. The baby Naans (tiny flat breads baked in the Tandoor), Navratan Khoorma, (Nine Jewels), Rogan Josh (Lamb Stew), the various Indian dishes I savour frequently. If one thing strikes me of India, it is their cuisine. The Indian kitchen is one of the best this world has to offer.
A visit of the famous Hindu temple in Kanpur is on our next Agenda. The temple is known amongst Hindus for its unique design structure.
We reach the railway crossing, just when the barriers move down, accompanied by loud ringing of the bell. People rushing through the barrier, lifting it up to pass, crossing from both sides of the tracks. No one cares about the oncoming train, as Mr. Rakej .explains, every year people are being killed by the trains. As the minutes pass on, and no show of reduction of human traffic across the rails follows, I am getting anxious more and more. Yet the people still no sign of stopping to cross. The tracks are now vibrating, the trains whistle blowing not far, there, one motor scooter with family, man, woman and child, cross with their scooter. I want to close my eyes, and there another type with a bicycle enters the danger zone. Then, in a flash the train speeds through the crossing, at great speed, well over 120 mph. I can’t see a thing in the dark, almost I am certain those people have been hit.
When it is all over, the train has passed, I notice the bicyclist, who holds his bike across his chest, inches to the train’s carriages. An unbelievable experience, this will stay in my memories forever. I was breathless so to speak, not being able to comprehend the situation. Yet, my guide was unimpressed, noticing this is an everyday experience with the resulting consequences for those who can’t make it. If something ever struck me about this country, it must have been this incident.
The show of disrespect for life is over, we carry on to see the biggest Hindu temple in Kanpur. White marble from the onset, every one removes his shoes, and I am thinking if I should leave my pair of Moreschis or not. The temple entrance is a haven for rats, these rats are everywhere in here, crawling and running around in masses. The temple honors rats, they have a sacred status and are fed and looked after by the temple’s keepers. Donations are accepted for their upkeep. Apart from the rat infestation, the temple is a complex of marvel. Built to the highest standards, with no expense spared white marble throughout, I look stunned. In contrast to the outside world, the Kanpur temple represents the most lavishly built structure I have seen. The stark contrast of everyday poverty visible is amazing. And as it is Friday night, people are streaming to pray, lighting their brought incense. The scent of exotics, the scent of India is all present wherever you go.
Mr. Rakej has completed his prayers, and we leave, the impressions linger with me till this day, and Kanpur will be in my memories forever.
A travel to India, by HR.

A maui tanning adventure

A Maui Tanning Adventure

Great secret spots you’ve probably never heard of and browning tips you need to know.

Love sunbathing? Looking for that perfect golden tan? Majestic coastlines and breathtaking sceneries make Maui the best place to catch some sun on the planet. Maui offers a variety of welcoming venues that are nothing short of a sun lovers paradise. Each coast delivers something different. Whether your a fun loving show off, who craves crowds and action, or a sun worshiper that seeks a more remote setting, your sure to find a spot that is suits your style.

Lahaina Side

If youre looking for action, easy access, glistening white sand beaches, and endless sun, the Lahaina coast is sure to float your boat. Lahaina literally translates to “land of the relentless sun”. Finding a beach to sun your buns couldnt be easier. Drive along the coast until you spot a beach you like, pull over and enjoy. If you are single, be sure to stroll Kaanapali and Airport Beach, you may meet the love of your life. Dont forget your Locals sandals. The sand can be especially hot during summer time!

Kehei Side

The Kehei coast offers the same as far as sun and accessibility. Makena Beach is easily found on the map. If you’re up for an adventure head just beyond the main beach (to the left at the end of the beach, and over the little hill), a land of fun in the sun awaits. This beach isn’t for everyone. If you want to toss of your suit and play some Frisbee or tan your “white parts” this clothing optional beach will be a blast. Sundays are like a mini festival with live drumming and dancing. The dolphins are known to cruise by from time to time.

Hana Side

The Hana side of the island is known for its heavier rainfall and lush landscape. Don’t be fooled. There is still plenty of sun to go round. For a personal oasis away from the main crowds and attractions check out Red Sands beach. Free spirits can soar at this quiet little cove tucked away from it all at the edge of Hana Town. Just ask for directions at the Hasegawa General Store. Pick up some food along the drive at one of the many local stands. The local organic fruits are strong with “Mana”, the sacred force of the universe. Red sands beach is as beautiful as it is rich in Hawaiian History. The protected pools are fed by pristine, cold-water springs. These brackish pools were sacred to the Hawaiian people. Hawaiian women would travel to this hidden sanctuary to give birth in the water. Clothing is optional on this beach. The hike to Red Sands isn’t for everyone. It’s steep and a little scary, but if you’re good on your feet, an adventurer, it’s nothing but a short jaunt with a sweet treat waiting at the end. Remember to haul out what you brought in and even though it may be tempting, leave the beautiful red sand where it is. It is considered taboo to take any with you.

Secret Tanning Spot

The real treasure waits just past Hana. Drive about 1/3 of a mile past mile marker 39 on the Pi’ilani Highway. There is going to be a white bridge with Alelele written on the side of it. Here you will notice several trails moving inland towards Alelele Falls. Technically, this area is also inside of Haleakala National Park, but most people spend their time at the overcrowded ‘Ohe’o Gulch area and never visit this part of the park. Alelele Stream is easy to find, and it is about a 10-minute walk along the trail (and stream bed) to get to this waterfall. There is a pullout on the makai side of the road that leads to a landing where you can park the car. You may have to rock skip a bit and/or cross the stream, but keep heading towards the valley wall where the waterfall is. This waterfall is very beautiful, and hardly anybody knows it is here. As is typical with many falls on Maui, in the summertime it may not be flowing. If the weather has been especially dry, you can probably assume as much for the falls and just may want to skip this spot. It is traditional to leave a Pohaku (Hawaiian offering to the ancestors made by wrapping a lava rock in a Ti leaf). You will see them on the way in to the falls.

Browning Tips

In your search for endless sun and fun on Maui, don’t forget to care for that beautifully golden skin. Here are 5 essential tips all the locals know.

1) Even the darkest of skin can burn so limit your time in the sun. Only use a tanning accelerant like Maui Babe Browning Lotion if you are an expierenced tanner and know your limits.
2) Be cautious when choosing your sunscreen, most brands either wash off or clog your pores (causing the dreaded tourist rash). Choose a breathable water-resistant brand.
3) Take a shade/dip in water break every 45 minutes or so. This gives your skin a chance to heal and will result in a healthier tan.
4) Always rinse off salt water as it dries the skin out, leading to wrinkly, leathery looking skin.
5) Rehydrating your skin after sun exposure is really the key. A light soothing coconut oil or moisturizing aloe vera treatment after a good tanning session will give you that Maui tan you’ve been dreaming about.

When it comes to tanning, the island of Maui is the place to be. Once again, Maui No Ka Oi? “Maui is the best”.
